v. modale
might, come tutti i verbi modali, ha caratteristiche particolari:
● ha significato di condizionale;
● non ha forme flesse (-s alla 3a pers. sing. pres., -ing, -ed), non è mai usato con ausiliari e non ha quindi tempi composti;
● forma le domande mediante la semplice posposizione del soggetto;
● la forma negativa è might not, spesso abbreviato in mightn\'t;
● l\'infinito che segue non ha la particella to;
● viene usato nelle question tags NOTA D\'USO: -could have-
1 (esprime eventualità, probabilità) – You might be right, potresti aver ragione; It might prove difficult, la cosa potrebbe dimostrarsi difficile; He might not agree, potrebbe non essere d\'accordo; You might have underestimated her, potresti averla sottovalutata
2 (nel discorso indiretto) – He said he might be late, (rif. al futuro) ha detto che potrebbe tardare; (rif. al pass.) disse che avrebbe potuto tardare; We thought you might have already left, pensavamo che tu potessi essertene già andata
3 (dopo i verbi di timore, speranza, ecc., al passato) – I was afraid he might hurt himself, temevo che si facesse (o che si sarebbe fatto) male; I hoped he might succeed, speravo che riuscisse; I feared she might have been arrested, temevo che potessero averla arrestata
4 (esprime possibilità non realizzata) – I might have been killed, avrei potuto essere ucciso; If we hadn\'t given the alarm, there might have been casualties, se non avessimo dato l\'allarme, ci sarebbero potute essere (o forse ci sarebbero state) delle vittime
5 (esprime un suggerimento) – We might go to the cinema, potremmo andare al cinema; You might like to have a look at this, forse ti interessa dare un\'occhiata a questo
6 (antiq. o form.) (esprime richiesta cortese) – Might I ask you your name?, posso chiederle come si chiama?; Might I make a suggestion?, potrei suggerire una cosa?; Might I ask you what you\'re doing here?, potrei sapere che cosa ci fate qui?; che cosa fate qui, se è lecito?
7 (esprime una concessione) – She might be clever, but…, sarà intelligente, ma…; He might have lots of money, but his manners are atrocious, sarà anche pieno di soldi, ma ha maniere pessime
8 (esprime rammarico o rimprovero per qc. di non avvenuto) – He might at least apologize, potrebbe almeno chiedere scusa; You might have told me, avresti potuto dirmelo
● might as well ► well (2) □ They might well change their minds, potrebbero benissimo cambiare idea □ as you might expect, come ci si potrebbe aspettare □ as you might imagine, come puoi immaginare □ as well he [she, etc.] might (be), a buon diritto; comprensibilmente □ I might have guessed (o I might have known)!, avrei dovuto immaginarlo!; me lo sarei dovuto aspettare!
