ὄϊς (ovis), ὁ, ἡ, att. οἶς, gen. ὄϊος, att. οἰός, auch schon Hom. Il. 12, 451 Od. 21, 408, wie im gen. plur. οἰῶν, Il. 3, 198 Od. 14, 100, acc. ὄϊν, οἶν, οἴεσι, 11, 386, gew. bei Hom. ὀΐεσσι, auch ὄεσσι, Il. 6, 25. 11, 106 Od. 9, 418, ὄϊας, zsgzgn ὄϊς, Hom., Hes. O. 777, att. οἶς, – das Schaaf, sowohl das männliche als das weibliche; doch wird das männliche, der Schaafbock, gew. ausdrücklich bezeichnet durch ἄρσην, wie das weibliche durch ὄϊς ϑῆλυς, Il. 10, 216 Od. 10, 527; häufiger ist aber, wo der Unterschied nicht besonders hervorgehoben werden soll, das fem.; so auch bei den Tragg. u. in Prosa; τὸ κάταγμα τῆς οἰός, Soph. Trach. 696. – [Οι in οἰός ist verkürzt von Mnesim. bei Ath. IX, 403 (v. 47).]
